I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start mopping up any water, put a container to catch any drips, and remove important things from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
